One wonderful thing I learned about was from Aimee Nezhukumatathil’s poem, “Heliophilia”: Rhubarb makes a wild popping or crackling noise when it grows in the dark. Now I’ve seen videos of this occurrence and I love it. We have yet to truly understand the language of plants.

Okay, I’ve just finished Sigrid Nunez’s The Friend and wow. I’m so moved and I want to read it again. Mainly, a beautiful written novel about grief, writing, and a dog. Apparently it’s my life.

I think one of the best books I read this year was Roger Reeves’s “Best Barbarian.” It’s super varied, personal and political, and it has a lot of guts behind it.
