I finally finished reading Serhii Plokhy “The Gates of Europe,” his exhaustive history of Ukraine. I never really knew much about the history of Eastern Europe. Very different from the history of the USA. Centuries of clashing armies and rising and falling empires. 1

I always thought that “totalitarian” was a synonym for "dictatorial" or "authoritarian.” Having just finished Hannah Arendt’s “Origins of Totalitarianism” I now see the difference. Also, the GOP are behaving precisely like they want a totalitarian world. This is a Very Bad Thing.
