@CRFIrvine Hard question. I've realised that lots of the ones I love most are elegies: In Memoriam, Hardy Poems 1912-13, Douglas Dunn's Elegies. In other languages, I'd say Rilke, Octavio Paz, Catullus. Maybe the most romantic of all for me is Yeats's He wishes for the cloths of heaven.

@MinxMarple Stephen Fry's The Ode Less Travelled is pretty good. Also The Making of a Poem, Eavan Boland's Norton Anthology. Robert Hass's A Little Book on Form - but don't be fooled by the title, it's actually pretty hardcore. I wouldn't start there, but it's full of insight.
