Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood
Trevor NoahI picked this up for a bit of light reading and then it turned out to be the most incredible story. Reminded me of the time I read I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings without knowing anything about it and was blown away by how much PLOT there was in Maya Angelou’s early life.

Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mount Everest Disaster
Jon KrakauerKrakauer went to Everest to write a piece about over-tourism, but ended up being witness to one of the most famous mountaineering disasters...I loved the visceral depiction of oxygen deprivation...Gripping and thought-provoking.

How to Sleep at Night
Elizabeth HarrisThis was a quick, fun, funny read. All the characters kept making choices that felt inevitable given their personalities... I did have the feeling that if I were friends with any of the three protagonists, I would have spent a lot of my time shout-texting them “NO! THAT IS A BAD IDEA!”

The Genetic Lottery: Why DNA Matters for Social Equality
Kathryn Paige HardenThere’s too much to say! I'm barely scratching the surface of this fascinating book, and my summary will not get across the care Harden takes to present her data in a responsible, actively anti-eugenic way.

Unwinding Anxiety: New Science Shows How to Break the Cycles of Worry and Fear to Heal Your Mind
Judson BrewerThe main thing I took from this book is that anxiety can be addictive. It can begin to feel like “the appropriate response to having unfinished tasks ahead”...But really you need to stop engaging with the ruminative nature of anxiety entirely.
