GRACE NOTES by Bernard MacLaverty blew me away with its portrait of a young mother, especially the conjuring of postpartum depression. It also reminded me of how rare it is to read a female character created by a male author who is not a collection of sexist stereotypes.

I’m only one chapter into the audio version of Barbara Kingsolver’s DEMON COPPERHEAD (thank you, @librofm!) and I am in love. It is a looong listen/read, but I can already tell it won’t be enough time with this protagonist.

I found memoirs the easiest to follow & most enjoyable at first: • Heavy by @KieseLaymon • Born a Crime by @Trevornoah • Walking with Ghosts by Gabriel Byrne • Wow, No Thank You by Sam Irby, who is a superb writer but/and you really must *hear* her read her work

I imagine the judges weren't about to include two books by Irish women on the shortlist, but I also just finished Audrey Magee's THE COLONY and whew. It will not be for everyone (it takes guts to write two unlikeable main characters), but wow, it got right inside me.
