Plato's Symposium does not have the word 'symposium' (συμπόσιον), a 'drinking together.' It does, however, have 'symposiast' (συμπότης). Plato's preferred word in the dialogue to describe the party or gathering at Agathon's house is a 'being together' (συνουσία).

@LosMapmaker @KingBolingbroke And this would be practically commendable at least for the reason that it would avoid the thorny issue of determining what in Plato’s dialogues reflects Plato’s own views or what for example, is for the sake of “making a city in words” for theoretical examination.

In the Laws Plato says a city should have 5,040 families, in the Republic an army of 1000 is sufficient to defend his conceived city. Aristotle in Politics VIII perhaps suggests an even smaller scale — everyone in a city gathered together should be able to hear a single herald.
