RIP shocked to hear about Martin Amis, whose 70s novels I grew up with, tho stopped reading after London Fields (which I hated) or maybe Time's Arrow (which I liked). First young Brit novelist I knew of with a sort of rock star following. My faves were Dead Babies & Other People.

Winston Churchill's state funeral took place when I was 10. Mum & dad encouraged me to watch it on TV, though I spent most of the time more interested in building a city out of books, biscuit tins & chess pieces on the living-room floor, inspired by E Nesbit's THE MAGIC CITY.

Reading W.G. Sebald's AUSTERLITZ, which begins with detailed descriptions of Antwerpen Centraal station & Antwerp Zoo. Also, "Until the railway timetables were synchronized the clocks of Lille & Liège did not keep the same time as the clocks of Ghent & Antwerp." Is this true?
