@lisaquestions @anderssandberg I see also that Stephen Jay Gould's "The Mismeasure of Man" came out in 1981 and I had certainly read it, as an Oxford philosophy undergraduate, some years before 1995. (Not assigned as reading for my course, but an obviously interesting book from the perspective of Phil of Sci)

@justin_garson @CiurriaMichelle @DrRJChapman My real issue is with the original point ‘500 years ago people now deemed mad would have been thought to be visionaries’ with the implication that madness is contingent. But the visionaries of the time had to struggle precisely so as not to be dismissed as mad! See Margery Kempe.

@celestialweasel Take Gwyneth Jones’ ‘Bold As Love’ series: it is faintly AH in that we start the series at a point where the dissolution of the United Kingdom into its constituent countries has already happened, but the key element is def magic (and music festivals).
