Birds of Prey: Fighters by Trade

Gail Simone

One small glimpse of hope was that Gail Simone decided to use her vast bear powers to bring Tora back in the pages of Birds of Prey. She barely gave an explanation, but given how half-assed her death was it didn't matter. https://t.co/80u1AXd3j1

@VanjaM19 The robot one is an absolute shoe-in but I may hate that Thor vs Loki story more for the "Asgardians have a gland at the back of their neck and if you hit it they switch from good to evil" thing. Wait for Al Ewing to bring this back for a big story!

Let's just... move on to 2011 and Chaos War: Dead Avengers, a tie-in to the Chaos War event centered around Hercules. The Dead Avengers spin-off featured a motley crew of then-deceased Avengers banding together from creative team Fred Van Lente and Tom Grummett. https://t.co/kHMMJEJq66

Doctor Mist is actually a very minor character mentioned in the 1923 novel "Wisdom's Daughter" by H. Rider Haggard, author of many pulp-ish adventure yarns. Bridwell simply liked this minor detail so much he made a character out of him for DC. https://t.co/xmo62q9B4F

Next up, early 1998 saw Conan the Barbarian: Lord of the Spiders by Roy Thomas and Stefano Raffaele. Thomas predictably goes out of his way to actually anchor this story in a specific time period, writing a sequel to Savage Sword #207-210. https://t.co/KOkXv2JKPQ

However as important as Fox is to how Shuma-Gorath ended up being a Marvel villain, he does not get the credit of first using the name in a Marvel comic. That honor goes to Roy Thomas in his adaptation of Howard's horror story "Dig Me No Grave" in Journey into Mystery vol 2 #1 https://t.co/pIL9aZUbae

@VanjaM19 @GavHigginbotham Yeah the "complete" collection that Marvel did a few years ago totally omits all the Who comics and the TF comics. A shame really.

@Elpico72 I don't think Stan wanted the Conan license either, honestly. Roy was the one working his ass off in the 70s to get Marvel stuff like Conan and Star Wars. And yeah the Tolkien estate are extremely anti-comic. I own both of the official Tolkien-based comics that ever came out.

@TheAllCreator @LetsTalkTommie It was literally one of John Byrne's demands in order for him to take the Superman contract. And they kept it in place for like 20 years after, wasn't revoked until the debut of the new Supergirl in Superman/batman by Loeb and Turner. And then you had Byrne's Krypton retconned
