@DanielTorday @AmericanGwyn I like loud writers, too, though. I think of essays as being rather loud, given the author. Joy Williams and Jonathan Franzen come to mind, of late. Even if I agree or disagree. I enjoy they decide to engage and talk about other writers. Woolf b4. Quiet is nice, too.

McEwan is never mentioned, here. I think I know why. But a book like Enduring Love? Just the title alone - but it's a breathtaking novel. On Chesil Beach and Black Dogs. Well. And Sweet Tooth is pomo wizardry. So fun. I also LOVE Atonement. And The Cement Garden. Hmmmm

@bleakhousing Yeah. Also: Nicholson Baker is masterful working this form - and variations. I LOVED the pacing of Cormac McCarthy's Stella Maris. The perfect companion to the more challenging The Passenger. The more time goes by, the more I LOVE those bookS (in concert).
