@kellybarnhill Agree on all points. And never forget: F. Scott Fitzgerald died with only a few hundred copies of Great Gatsby sold. Then it went on to be one of the backlist best sellers of the century! There are infinity stories of publishing, money, and not going in forecast ways.

A woman could never have written James Joyce's Ulysses because 140 gate-keepers would have told her that there's no likable character and people come to books to make friends. (Yes I know written isn't published but I bet there are one zillion women's Ulysses in garbage dumps.)

@DanielTorday @MsShade Came here to also say Lucky Jim, but also, much darker, Shirley Jackson Hangsaman, think it was out of print for a while but it's incredible on characters of college types and girl dorm-life, yes mid-century but so much still relevant
