@jack_hamilton I just read about a reviewer sending a draft of his review of Arthur C Clarke's 2001 to Stanley Kubrick. He'd misunderstood the ending. Kubrick wrote back to tell him that actually it does not conclude with the end of the world. So that was helpful but generally hell no.

Haven't asked a work question for a while. I want to read a juicy fact-packed book about the 1918 flu but torn between the two big ones: John M Barry's The Great Influenza and Laura Spinney's Pale Rider. Is one better than the other? Both excellent in different ways?

Reading Claire Dederer's excellent Monsters, about the art/artist debate, and realised that GL is my Exhibit A: what he has become cannot diminish my love for his old sitcoms. There's no squaring that circle — it's as if my brain has decided that these are two different people.
