@Pontevedrian @takhalus The anecdote about one student is not really my experience, at least not here in the UK - my 12 year old is reading Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein for school English. State highschool. Kid who can’t cope with The Scarlet Letter might be a whizz at biology.

@Sathnam Vikram Seth’s A Suitable Boy. Gave up the first time because the opening is so slow and Mrs Rupa Mehra is a boring and unsympathetic character. Picked it up again later and read it twice straight through over a period of months.

@jdsdawson @DavidVeevers1 Still not the case. Their main conquests in the Deccan, Ahmadnagar, Bijapur, and Golconda, were Muslim Sultanates already. Richard Eaton's India in the Persianate Age is a great read -- I'd recommend it.
