Matrix
Lauren Groff

Wayward
Dana Spiotta
Still grazing on Dana Spiotta's excellent new novel, WAYWARD. One formalistic move I love is that the chapters increasingly become shorter as Sam changes: literally around the time when she becomes a gym rat. Dana Spiotta is such a terrific writer. You need to read this book.

Crossroads
Jonathan Franzen
Jonathan Franzen's CROSSROADS: 600 pages. A man. Crowd: "Genius! I love it!" No complaints about its length. Hanya Yanagahira's TO PARADISE: 720 pages. A woman. Crowd: "Oh God! It's too long! It's too ambitious!" Why can't women write ambitious novels? Come on. It's 2022.
