Techniques of the Observer: On Vision and Modernity in the Nineteenth Century
Jonathan Crary@ben_towle @DominoComics Jonathan Crary's Techniques of the Observer (despite its unnecessarily pretentious title) does a great job of explaining this shift with lots of evidence and in a pretty concise way (it's mercifully short for an academic text). Inventing the Way of the Samurai: Nationalism, Internationalism, and Bushido in Modern Japan
Oleg Benesch@OhsakaRin You might like Oleg Benesch's "Inventing the Way of the Samurai" which talks about the invention of bushido. It's quite fascinating how something that is always portrayed as some kind of deeply rooted Japanese spirit was largely created out of thin air in modern times.
