I was reading Celia Paul's (another example) letters to Gwen John recently and the way he dominated over their lives was intense. Lucian Freud basically told Paul that he thought she should give up art to adore him

Martin Amis seemed to always be wearing black tie with a dickie bow. I feel that’s what my literary world experience is missing, more formal attire. Even when we went to the ambassador’s house it was smart business. I want to wear a fucking ball gown and smoke straights for once.
