Suite Francaise
Irene Nemirovsky
It’s just the most startlingly beautiful book. And it’s the book that I’m personally always kind of aiming toward as a writer, in terms of prose style and structure.

Scary Monsters: A Novel in Two Parts
Michelle de Kretser
It’s got a really interesting structure. It’s essentially two novellas. There’s only a very slight overlap, but they’re concerned with the same themes around immigration and xenophobia. And it’s just really kind of harrowing and beautifully written. I really loved it.

Piranesi
Susanna Clarke
My favourite book to give as a gift these days is Piranesi ... At first it's entirely baffling and inexplicable ... but the pieces snap into place in such an elegant and satisfying way, and when I read it I was left awestruck by its beauty and originality.

How to Be Both
Ali Smith
@TheLincoln Yeah, if I were in this predicament I'd write a second novella that was somehow linked to the first and then put them together and call it a novel. Ali Smith's How To Be Both and Michelle de Kretser's Scary Monsters are both fantastic examples of this form.

All about Love: New Visions
Bell Hooks
@lizharmer I could have written this tweet! I read bell hooks’s ALL ABOUT LOVE this year and loved what she wrote about friendship; we tend to minimize it in our language (“we’re just friends”) but friendship is so monumentally important

Station Eleven: A Novel (National Book Award Finalist)
Emily St John Mandel
If I spoke at your school / one town one read event / local book festival between 2015-2020 and this sounds oddly familiar, it's because I gave my Station Eleven lecture to a character in Sea of Tranquility. "What if it always IS the end of the world?" was my favourite part. https://t.co/rH3Wim6CYh
