Cyber Mage
Saad Z. Hossain
In this week's Strange Horizons issue, I have a review of @saadzhossain's Cyber Mage, which I really enjoyed. http://strangehorizons.com/non-fiction/cyber-mage-by-saad-z-hossain/ https://twitter.com/strangehorizons/status/1494724715927191554

The This
Adam Roberts
Burned through @arrroberts’ The This in one sitting. Fantastic SF and possibly my favourite book by Adam. The profusion of Easter Eggs was a joy. I’d love to see an annotated edition. Favourite line: “Loneliness corrodes the human spirit. It’s a rust upon our bright metal.” https://t.co/uhApBqOxoM

The Lay of the Last Minstrel
Walter Scott
@YasmineJibril I really liked The Mabinogion, but I believe the standard translation is by Lady Guest, who was English (albeit her husband was Welsh). Also, this is definitely very embellished, but Walter Scott’s Lay of the Last Minstrel hit all the sweet spots re Scotland.

Germany: Memories of a Nation
Neil MacGregor
Finished reading Neil MacGregor’s Germany: Memories of a Nation. An enjoyable read, and I learned a lot, but its bizarre memory-holing of the entire history of German colonialism left me with serious reservations about the intellectual honesty of the book as a whole. https://t.co/RZIro8KJ4e

The Dispossessed
Ursula K. Le Guin
Finally got a copy of @R_Emrys’ A Half-Built Garden and started reading. It’s fashionable to invoke Ursula Le Guin these days, but this *genuinely* feels like the heir to The Dispossessed - in the depth, care, and richness with which it imagines that alternative society. https://t.co/UYO2tShG22

Glory
Noviolet Bulawayo
NoViolet Bulawayo's "Glory": for the first fifty pages, it felt like I was re-reading a story I'd read many times before. But then the unique narrative voice began to come to the fore, and ever since then it's been getting better and better (halfway through now).

Black Leopard, Red Wolf
Marlon James
In this week's @strangehorizons, I have a review essay on Marlon James' Moon Witch, Spider King - a book that continues the (subversive) conversation with the epic fantasy genre that James began in Black Leopard, Red Wolf: http://strangehorizons.com/non-fiction/moon-witch-spider-king-by-marlon-james/
