All Quiet on the Western Front
Erich Maria Remarque
I cannot tell you whether you should watch the new movie, I have not seen it and don‘t intend to, as the memory of the book is too prominent in my mind. But do read Remarque‘s 'All quiet on the Western Front' if you haven’t already. /3

Free: A Child and a Country at the End of History
Lea Ypi
Free' by @lea_ypi is extremely moving, controversial, thought-provoking, and confirmed me in my opinion that we need to study the 1990s a lot more to understand the present. It is also a book with a conclusion I disagree with.

Post Wall, Post Square: How Bush, Gorbachev, Kohl, and Deng Shaped the World After 1989
Kristina Spohr
Unlike many histories of the end of the Cold War, Kristina Spohr‘s book does not focus exclusively on East-West relations, but brings China into her analysis of the 1989-92 period. Informative, very readable, and highly pertinent to our time of renewed geopolitical upheaval.

The Digital Republic: On Freedom and Democracy in the 21st Century
Jamie Susskind
I have learned so much from @jamiesusskind 's Digital Republic. Ambitious and nuanced, and yet easy and enjoyable to read for someone like me who knows less about tech than she should. The book to read about the way the world works in our digital times.

The Escape Artist: The Man Who Broke Out of Auschwitz to Warn the World
Jonathan Freedland
Possibly the most important book I have read this year. The story of a Jewish teenager who survived two years at Auschwitz, escaped, and authored a report about it that found its way to the centres of Allied power. This is not easy to read. But read it.
