Inferno: Italian-English Parallel Text
Dante
@kayus04333640 @bigsooty57 I must confess I don't remember anything in Eliot about people going round in circles. There's a reference in The Waste Land to Dante's Inferno ("I had not thought death had undone do many") but there's no reference there to going round in circles. Am I misremembering?

Dante: The Divine Comedy
Robin Kirkpatrick
@colinb8 @henrywgc @nguyenhdi I read Clive James' translation of Dante, though I do have Robin Kirkpatrick's translation, which comes in a dual language edition. I haven't read that yet, but I do look through the original Italian at times (though I don't know the language) just to get an idea of how it sounds

Bleak House
Charles Dickens
https://t.co/MyA2B2T8CL Splendid blog post containing a close reading of a key passage from "Bleak House". This is the kind of reading the novel deserves, but all too rarely gets.

The Golden Bowl
Henry James
@nguyenhdi I agree with your list, but would add one of the late Henry James novels (“The Wings of the Dove”, “The Ambassadors”, or “The Golden Bowl”) which just make it into the 20th century; and Carson McCullers’ “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter”. But such lists are inevitably personal.

Middlemarch
George Eliot
@DStrungk @DickensFellowHQ @DickensMuseum According to Michael Slater’s biography, Dickens claimed never to have read Jane Eyre. He admired George Eliot, but Middlemarch was published shortly after Dickens’ death. So it couldn’t have been either of those.

The Little Demon
Fyodor Sologub
@ianpacemain PS Another great early modernist Russian novel that I think is a must-read is “The Little Demon” by Fyodor Sologub. This was written in the 1890s, and is - shall we say - a bit strange. But compelling nonetheless. https://t.co/gJIzD0FJpT
