Old Country
Matt Query
OLD COUNTRY is a weird one. When I read it as a Reddit horror story, it chilled me to my core. It shows some growing pains in its expansion to a novel, but I still dig it. It just loses the vague terror that defined it when it was written specifically for an online forum.

Madly, Deeply: The Diaries of Alan Rickman
Alan Rickman
Decided to open my copy of MADLY, DEEPLY to 1999 and found a bunch of Alan Rickman diary entries about what a total dick Tim Allen was on the set of GALAXY QUEST. Sam Rockwell even apologizes to Rickman on behalf of American actors.

John Wayne: The Life and Legend
Scott Eyman
Scott Eyman’s John Wayne biography quotes numerous people calling him the most beautiful man they had ever seen. As someone who has only seen Wayne movies after he aged into his more grizzled persona... Uh, wow. (Shame he was a right wing lunatic.) https://t.co/sg6CftbTa6

Cary Grant: A Brilliant Disguise
Scott Eyman
Scott Eyman’s Cary Grant biography was so effing good that I immediately started reading his John Wayne book and have his John Ford book on-deck.

Reacher: Killing Floor (Movie Tie-In)

Oscar Wars: A History of Hollywood in Gold, Sweat, and Tears
Michael Schulman
I highly recommend reading the new book OSCAR WARS if you want a reminder that the Academy, while a vital cornerstone of film history whether you like it or not, is very, very silly. (Phil is correct.) https://t.co/tVBLTOst08

The King of Confidence: A Tale of Utopian Dreamers, Frontier Schemers, True Believers, False Prophets, and the Murder of an American Monarch
Miles Harvey
Miles Harvey’s THE KING OF CONFIDENCE so deftly and chillingly parallels 1850s America with 2020s America that the concern of a second Civil War now permanently lurks in the back of my brain like a loose bat. Happy Fourth of July!

Killer Instinct: How Two Young Producers Took on Hollywood and Made the Most Controversial Film of the Decade
Jane Hamsher
Jane Hamsher’s KILLER INSTINCT, about the making of NATURAL BORN KILLERS, is the literary equivalent of falling backwards off the bridge you just burnt with both middle fingers extended. Incredibly entertaining, but also, based on Hamsher’s IMDB page, career-ending.

War on the Border: Villa, Pershing, the Texas Rangers, and an American Invasion
Jeff Guinn
Reading Jeff Guinn’s WAR ON THE BORDER and feeling genuine shame that it took me this long to learn about the United States’ petty, illegal occupation of Veracruz, Mexico in 1914.

Retail Gangster: The Insane, Real-Life Story of Crazy Eddie
Gary Weiss
RETAIL GANGSTER by Gary Weiss breaks down the absurd rise and fall of the Crazy Eddie electronics chain in the ‘80s, and reads like the cast of GOODFELLAS stumbled into a season of SUCCESSION. Bleak stuff, but also darkly funny where it counts. Would make one hell of a miniseries
