My wife and I both deeply enjoyed The Strange by Nathan Ballingrud, which really is True Grit meets Ray Bradbury just like it says on the (dandelion wine) bottle. Highly advise reading it w/o knowing its premise. Cheers @Danchaon or whoever hipped me to this
