@antipode_elliot I think the best book ever written about popular music remains Ian MacDonald's REVOLUTION IN THE HEAD, but RIP IT UP is also magisterial. I'm so much more impressed w/serious UK music criticism than with most US critics, even the Greil Marcus types.

Needless to say, @Popehat's "Law of Goats" (which itself paraphrases Kurt Vonnegut's essential wisdom from MOTHER NIGHT, a novel Nick would've been well-advised to read in middle school) applies to Fuentes here. WHY he says and does this stuff matters less than that he does it.
