J. M. CoetzeeJennifer Cooke2 novels with unlikeable, even unpleasant protagonists: Coetzee’s Disgrace & Cusk’s The Second Place. Yet I enjoyed reading the former and found the latter hard work to plough through. I’m fascinated by unlikeable characters and what makes them compellingly readable (or not).
