In “The Imperative of Responsibility,” Hans Jonas argues that “the prophecy of doom” be focused on over “the prophecy of bliss” when it comes to thinking about new technologies’ potentials. Though that may seem hyperbolic, too often we refuse to see risks until it’s too late.

My students quite liked Octavia Butler’s “Parable of the Sower,” but many of them said they found Kim Stanley Robinson’s “Ministry for the Future” too optimistic.

@YagiBaba While governments have at various points been involved in eugenics programs, something doesn’t have to involve governmental pressure to qualify as eugenics. I’d recommend reading Daniel Kevles’s book “In the Name of Eugenics” if you’re interested in this history.
