A Place of Greater Safety
Hilary Mantel
@yrthling ASOIAF does a nice job expanding the world at a pace you can handle, and literarily, I think it's much simpler than Hilary Mantel. Wolf Hall doesn't suffer from this tendency as much as A Place of Greater Safety, but I think it's still there.

Wolf Hall
Hilary Mantel
@yrthling This thread is super interesting to me because while I enjoy Hilary Mantel her historical fiction often seems like fanfic of the era with many portentous conversations that I wonder if they land without the background. Glad to see Wolf Hall does for you!

Lovecraft Country
Matt Ruff
For Oct 12 and 13, some Lovecraft reimaginings. I love when people take that old racist's works and improve upon them. First Lovecraft Country, by Matt Ruff. The show is good but I like the book better, and its mix of prosaic and cosmic horror https://t.co/kxYK6ewxi4 #creepytober

The Mists of Avalon
Marion Zimmer Bradley
Look, I shipped Arthur/Morgaine when I read The Mists of Avalon at age 11, because fiction is fiction and she should have taken over and run Britain as a pagan paradise instead of moping for 800+ pages. https://t.co/UVkdz0L3Md

The Willows
Algernon Blackwood
For October 2, my creepy media is The Willows by Algernon Blackwood, a story that HP Lovecraft said was the scariest story he'd ever read, and it really extremely unsettling. Also, it's not specifically racist, unlike ol' HP. https://t.co/512IbLr96Y

The Haunting of Hill House
Shirley Jackson
For Oct 7, I am recommending, as I always do, The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. From it's exquisite opening line to its final, this might be a perfect book. https://t.co/IaVw1kjh7R #creepytober

Fat: The Owner's Manual
Ragen Chastain
@JillGMedArt @shirleneobuobi That's great! The only quibble I would have is most fat activists say the term obese is harmful. Ragen Chastain whose excellent weight and healthare substack I recommend has a note about it on the bottom of every post: https://t.co/hZF9YXkuO7

The Ministry for the Future
Kim Stanley Robinson
I stopped reading The Ministry for the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson a couple months ago, right in the middle, because it was too depressing. It's a novel about climate change, and has some harrowing depictions of likely future disasters.
