Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood
Trevor Noah
"Born a crime: stories from a South African childhood" by Trevor Noah: fascinating look at life growing up as a "colored" youth in apartheid & post-apartheid South Africa. There is quite a bit of the book focusing on domestic violence, so prepare yourself.

One by One
Ruth Ware
"One by One" by Ruth Ware: I did not care for 2 of her other books. This one is good until about page 250 when it devolved into too much internal thought of the 2 alternating narrators. If you are going to hint at character secrets, don't do it too long.

The Dry
Jane Harper
"The survivors" by Jane Harper: not a bad read but not as good as "The Dry," for example. I enjoyed the locale but I felt the killer did not have enough foreshadowing.

My Policeman
Bethan Roberts
"My policeman" by Bethan Roberts: the book which the Amazon Prime movie is based upon: differs slightly from the movie, but the sadness is maintained. Beautiful prose though.

Paperbacks from Hell: The Twisted History of '70s and '80s Horror Fiction

"Paperbacks from Hell: the twisted history of '70s & '80s horror fiction" by Grady Hendrix w/Will Errickson: superb publishing history w/great illustrations of book covers.

Breakfast of Champions
Kurt Vonnegut
"Breakfast of Champions" by Kurt Vonnegut: a combo of stream-of-consciousness, satire and metafiction. Easy to read. If 1 part bores you, soon Vonnegut goes on another tangent. Definitely a classic, still relevant today.

Remarkably Bright Creatures
Shelby Van Pelt
"Remarkably Bright Creatures" by Shelby Van Pelt: not enough of the anthropomorphized octopus. Plus he was just used as a prop to the human story. But engaging to read and a lot of interesting perspectives.

Hour of the Witch
Chris Bohjalian
"Hour of the witch" by Chris Bohjalian: 5 stars for its wonderful comeuppance for evil characters at the end of this book about Puritan Boston in 1662-3. Women may as well be in Gilead.

Falling
T. J. Newman
"Falling" by T.J. Newman: the premise of this hijacked-plane tale is quite far-fetched, but it kept me reading to the end.
