Yesterday saw Sarah Ruhl's play Dear Elizabeth, based on letters between Lowell & Bishop. Today, driving to the Catskills, saw 5 dead skunks. Enough for hats for the whole family! Thought of Lowell's "Skunk Hour." Symbolism happens? Theme for the week? Wondering about tomorrow.

@belzpoems Read A Modern Instance & a raft of excerpts in grad school. Bet they don't do that now. If you can nab a B.A. in English without reading Shakespeare & Chaucer, & you can, why worry about poor old William Dean Howells? 😢 Like Longfellow, he had a great reputation in his time.
