The Guns of August: The Pulitzer Prize-Winning Classic about the Outbreak of World War I
Barbara W. Tuchman
The opening chapter of Barbara Tuchman's "The Guns of August" is probably my favorite chapter of non-fiction writing. Centered on the funeral procession of King Edward VII in 1910, it was a beautiful framework to describe issues of class, world order, & royal family dynamics.

Home and Exile
Chinua Achebe
@SouthernSylvs I commonly see this misattributed to Chinua Achebe. He referenced it in his 2000 introspective book, "Home and Exile". Interestingly he rejected it, saying the power of stories are enough for Africa to win the battle to speak meaningfully for itself.
