Halfway through reading “Gone with the Wind,” am struck by how oblivious Margaret Mitchell was to the reality of plantation slavery. It’s there, but only in the background.  Imagine writing a 1,000-page novel set in Germany in the 1930s w/o all that inconvenient anti-Semitism.
