Eugene Linden, _Fire and Flood: A People's History of Climate Change, from 1979 to the Present_ All of the interviews for those books are fabulous. Of course, in between are still episodes about Tudors and WWII, lol.

For beginners, the best place to start is They Say, I Say by Gerald Graff, followed by Style by Joe Williams (both founding voices of Comp). Grad sts in socsci should go straight to The Craft of Research, by multiple top authors in every aspect of socsci reading & writing.

@JohannaMellis Loren Graham's Ghost of the Executed Engineer is one of my all-time favorites. Barbara Engels's Mother and Daughters & Hallie Rubenhold's The Five for collective biography. Doug Smith's Rasputin is a great example of "biography of the myths bc there are no personal docs."

@NancyWingfield5 @laurenstokes @roloclark Ooh! This is great. I've been using Christopher Duggan's Fascist Voices, a secondary source obviously, but it's a close reading of (mainly) letters to Mussolini by (mostly) ordinary people and it was the closest I could get.

If you're out there looking for One Book for a freshman seminar, it should be Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, about scientific and Native ways of knowing. Everyone should read it. Absolutely brilliant, worldview-changing book.
