Until the other night, when I read it to Jack, I’d forgotten that within the first few lines of Beatrix Potter’s “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” we learn that Peter’s dad was caught by Mr. McGregor and then baked into a pie by his wife. Beatrix did not fuck around with exposition!
