I think a really helpful grounding text is Paul Farmer’s Fevers, Feuds and Diamonds. Ebola is a disease with a *lot* of public imagination occupied by the particular features of the virus. Farmer’s book is about how the political economy & history *matter* more.

People looking for a Marxist analysis of pandemic risk and novel contagions could do much worse than Mike Davis’s The Monster at Our Door. (Not sure the new intro for the rerelease on COVID holds up — I haven’t read it.)
