@Baddiel I did two dissertations on Henry James and can confirm the last big three novels are very hard work. Golden Bowl is effectively unreadable unless you have to professionally. I think Portrait is in the top three Victorian novels.

@FryRsquared I absolutely loved Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin. My favourite ever biography. But Bill Bryson has been my constant companion since childhood, so could never look beyond him (maybe Neither Here Nor There).

Happy 75th birthday to James Ellroy. His two-book run of American Tabloid and Cold Six Thousand is the most startling, brilliant, electrifying piece of sustained genre writing ever.
