To @mglave_melody and @BillKoenig who asked about Margaret Chase Smith and the character Betty White played in ADVISE AND CONSENT: yes, character's clearly inspired by Smith, who entered Senate in 1949 and spoke against McCarthy in 1950; the book came out in 1959, movie in 1962.
