@temple_winds i don't know much about Freud, so can't comment there. what i do know a bit about is Max Weber, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, and what you describe--and Rieff does--is straight out of Puritanism. Everything that happens to you is your fault.

@reznavajo wow. in "Wolf Hall," Hilary Mantel clarifies how the Church prior to Cromwell/Henry8/Protestants didn't allow ordinary people [non-clergy] to read any of the Bible, Old or New Testaments at all. all material had to come from oral teaching from clergy. pretty extreme.
