@RADennyAuthor One person. The more "produced" they are with multiple actors and sound effects, the worse they are. Best audiobook is difficult but my favorite reader of all time is probably George Guidall, and his reading that's stuck in my mind is Babbitt by Sinclair Lewis.

@BOliverBoehmer I don't think it's a singular phenomenon but a social one. The hell pit of the moment is the DCEU, but the classic example is probably Star Wars. 20 years it was "George Lucas destroyed my childhood". Today, it's racism and sexism. The Fandom Menace.

Warm take: Sylvia Plath's "The Bell Jar" is a plot-driven story. Whether or not everyone loves it, but we recognize it as one of the great achievements of literature in the 20th century. She was a little embarrassed of it and referred to it as a pot-boiler.
