Reading Darryl Pinckney’s “My Norman Mailer Problem—And Ours” in @thenation, I’m reminded of reading The Naked & the Dead as a young man & being puzzled—I found it so ordinary, so overrated. William Manchester’s Goodbye Darkness is a far more powerful book from the Pacific war.

Short story-wise, I'm a fan of Bruno Schulz, Isaac Babel, I.L. Peretz, Eudora Welty, Randall Kenan, Alice Munro, Cynthia Ozick, my pal @Peter_Orner, but my favorite book of short stories, hands down, is David Thomson's Biographical Dictionary of Film.
