For your friend who likes a fragmentary narrative with a smaller scope: Sarah Manguso's Very Cold People. Oof, this one hit close to home, but it's great. (Also, Louise Glück's Marigold and Rose, which is as small as a scope can be, and a very curious thing.)

Every so often you encounter a work of art that is genuinely stunning, in the sense that as much as you are compelled to continue the best response is to stop and gape, open-mouthed and rearranged. Preti Taneja's Aftermath is that kind of book. It is genuinely extraordinary.

@phayv I just read Akwaeke Emezi's You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty, which I liked a lot. I haven't started Anita Kelly's Love & Other Disasters yet, but it's come highly recommended and is next on my list.

You know how I've long been obsessed with Janice Galloway, and more recently obsessed with Radclyffe Hall? How did I not know before today that Galloway adapted The Well of Loneliness for Theatre Workshop, Edinburgh in the late 80s?! I'm so excited I can barely breathe.
