@EmmaKennedy There’s a really great book called ‘Tendencies’ by Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick which sort of lists all the various ways people used to understand their sexuality before it became hetero/homo/bi. It included automonosexualists, gynecomasts, people attracted to older people, BDSM etc.

@joroach Yeah it’s freaky right. Combine that with Byron’s connection via Villa Diodati to Mary Shelley who wrote Frankenstein and her mother who wrote A Vindication of the Rights of Women too and it’s all a bit overwhelming.

@ccatherineharv1 David Halperin in his book One Hundred Years of Homosexuality, pointed out that until about 130 years ago there was no understanding of a ‘homosexual’ or ‘heterosexual’ person.

@NickClancarty @GreenJennyJones @OwenJones84 Yes. And yet it wasn’t until the late sixties that being gay was decriminalized, and not until thirty years later that gay people had an equal age of consent, and later for equal marriage. We still routinely experience harassment and discrimination.

@realityishard22 @simlet @RBReich So you have no issue with them talking about Alexander the Great’s relationships with men, or with Ancient Greece’s very distinct approach? I mean maybe you object to that, but Plato? His symposium has quite a lot of gay stuff in it. You against philosophy?
