Read 1/2 Mieko Kawakami's novel, Heaven. The writing is good, but I don't think I need to finish.

I hadn’t realized Truffaut’s The Green Room was his take on Henry James “The Altar of the Dead.” I’ll need to rewatch. I can’t imagine trying to film it. The story is hilarious in its baroqueness (or baroque mess as autocorrect is demanding).

3/4 through Peter Handke's Sorrow Beyond Dreams, written about his mother's life following her suicide. "...my sentences crash in the darkness and lie scattered on the paper...This story, however, is really about the nameless, about speechless moments of terror."

@DodddWhite Incredible! I've run three marathons, but I've never gone beyond 26.1, though I've read a few books dealing about ultra runners. Have you read Scott Jurek's North?

Laszlo Krasznahorkai’s Chasing Homer is good but not great. I mean, it’s great compared to most novels, but I suspect he’s a great writer and the novel is only good compared to his other novels. I’m curious to check out his other books.

Finished Cormac McCarthy's Outer Dark. The novel is basically insane.

@sarahromewriter Or when things are really exhausting, ten pages of reading a day is still a novel a month. Just make it Henry James or something substantial. At the end of the year, you realize how much you’ve read. Just my take, obviously.

Just finished Murakami's The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. I really liked stretches of it, and liked some of the characters quite a lot, but other parts of the book are a bit too Alice in Wonderlandy for my taste.

Svetlana Alexievich's Secondhand Time comes to mind when I see the headlines of book-banning. Her take on the value of books in the Soviet Union when they were banned versus once they became available, is fascinating. Maybe a few more people in the US will actually want to read
