What Book Clubs Are Reading in June

The model and actor's June selection is a “twisted, gorgeously catty” novella set among Brazil's over-the-top upper crust, that stars a narcissistic, millennial art curator tearing her way through the fabulous city of Rio de Janeiro. “We chased after an early copy of this novella (Clara’s first to be translated to English) and fell in love with it very quickly.”

Natalie Portman selected one of the most anticipated books of the summer from the author of the Outline trilogy, whom the actor praised for “the way she disrupts form and the conventions of storytelling. Parade is a meditation on art, love, and femininity as we follow G, an artist who begins to paint upside down.”

For June, Dua Lipa picked this “masterclass in the art of the ‘non-fiction novel’” about a notorious killing during The Troubles in Northern Ireland. “It has all the elements of great fiction – mesmerising characters, intrigue and plot twists. And it also happens to be true…I guarantee you will be hooked from beginning to end,” raved the pop star.

This month, Emma Roberts and Karah Preiss invite their club members to delve into this actor’s fascinating memoir “of growing up among larger-than-life characters in Hollywood and Manhattan [that] finds wicked humor and glimmers of light in even the most painful of circumstances.”

For June, rapper Noname’s club recommends a memoir by writer and podcaster Carvell Wallace, known for his profiles of figures like Steph Curry and Viola Davis. In this courageous book, the author turns his focus inward, digging deep into his own life as a Black and queer man in America.

This month, the California Book Club examines an immigrant poet’s harrowing 3,000 mile journey from war-ravaged El Salvador to the United States at the age of 9. The story follows the courageous little boy as he crosses the Southern border on foot with a group of strangers in order to reunite with his mother and father.

The White Lotus meets Agatha Christie in this “perfect summer read” that Reese Witherspoon chose for her June club pick. “The Unwedding by Ally Condie opens with a wedding at a gorgeous resort in Big Sur... but everything begins to fall apart when the main character Ellery discovers a dead body the morning of the ceremony," teased the Oscar winner.

In addition to Reese's Book Club, this summer the Oscar winner teamed up with her nieces and selected a Shakespearean gamer romance as her YA summer pick. “YA is a feeling. It’s a warm summer day reading in the sun, lots of nostalgia, and gushing together over the characters in Twelfth Knight by @afarolfollmuth ✨ We can’t wait to hear what you think about this YA Pick!”

This month, actor Dakota Johnson chose “a beautiful novel about Texas, motherhood, and psychedelics” by the author of the National Book Award-nominated story collection Black Light.
