My 1st book rec: Shuggie Bain, won the Booker Prize, by Douglas Stuart, a fashion industry exec. Based on his poor childhood and alcoholic mother, it's bleak, dark, funny, powerful. I loved it although some find it too dark. (My late mom was alcoholic, so it resonated for me.)
