Dramatic Works of John Ford: 2
John Ford
@KevinMale5 @rickburin The source is the original novel/magazine story from 1913. It was directly adapted 5 times, the 2 silent versions are now considered lost. The 1929, 1936 & 1948 versions are all great & well worth seeing. When the John Ford version is the weakest you know you have some good films

The Virginian: A Horseman of the Plains
Owen Wister
One of the black eyes of the Western genre is that so much of its tropes & themes originate with Owen Wister's 1902 novel The Virginian, which is a decent read & also a deeply evil apologia for lynching (though it draws the line at lynching a man for his race)... https://t.co/lEI6KXahXX

Appaloosa
Robert B. Parker
@Mongo4570 @wildwestxtra I'd also recommend the novel by Jack Schaefer (author of Shane), which is pretty different from both films. Robert B. Parker (author of Appaloosa) was a writer on the Selleck film & he claimed it was going to stick closer to the novel, but it was just a remake of the 70s film.

The Collected Works of Billy the Kid
Michael Ondaatje
@jamie_uhler @ThatDonLewis If someone wants to read a Western that I do believe might have directly influenced McCarthy's Blood Meridian, then they might consider checking out Michael Ondaatje's The Collected Works of Billy the Kid, which is a mix of harsh violence & surreal poetic imagery...
