I just read Odd John by Olaf Stapledon. Like Last and First Men it's deeply weird and weirdly deep 1930s philosophical sci-fi. I feel like most antiheroic superhero stories have basically been cogged from it.

@richardjgodwin There’s lots of complaining in George Gissing’s New Grub Street about the explosion of dumbed down newspapers at the expense of serious writing. There’s even a bit later in the book where soneone fantasises about a publication that’s just headlines (which feels really prescient)
