@nikkidolson A great first line poses a question in the reader's mind and provides immediate entry into a conflict. Personally, I prefer to do this with a simple declarative sentence, which I think I picked up from reading a lot of literary short stories. Very sad to hear about the passing of Peter Straub. GHOST STORY, JULIA, and KOKO made such a difference to me as a reader and THE TALISMAN was like dream fulfillment when I was a kid. What an amazing career.

@blacklionking73 @thomaspluck I remember an interview Woodrell did once -- this was around when "Give Us A Kiss" was out, where the main character was an English teacher, where he said he had to get used to being in a workshop where people would say shit to him that would get their teeth knocked out in a bar.

I don't know why @johncusack is trending, but you should go seek out The Ice Harvest, a really faithful adaptation of the great Scott Phillips novel. Richard Russo did the screenplay. Harold Ramis directed. An underrated noir classic.
