Reread Delillo’s White Noise last week. Theme, to simplify, is mass hysteria among the “educated.” It reminded me that 20th century writers did an astonishingly comprehensive job, almost unbelievably so, of anticipating our current reality. Yet it did almost no good. Amazing.

In the early 1960s, an aging John Steinbeck went home to California and visited his family. (The scene is in his book, Travels with Charley.) He & his family argued viciously over politics, as many did then. Steinbeck uses the words “civil war.” We’re still here 60 yrs later.
