The boy at the table in this work by Jan Mankes is reading a book. In the same year this was painted (1911) Mankes wrote of reading Thomas à Kempis' 'De imitatione Christi.' @bethfelkerjones Sometimes it’s as much WHEN you read it as what you read. When I read “The Imitation of Christ” by Thomas a Kempis it was as if it was just the right day for my head to be ready for it, to take it all in. Also way cool, “Take This Bread” by Sara Miles.
